Hi,

I have had a go with the Online U value calculator.
I only managed to input materials under 'User Defined' category but couldn't get any selection from the 'General materials' or 'Thermal insulations' tabs. There's no pop-up window/s for materials selection when I clicked on those tabs.
Would appreciate your help/advises how to get them working.
Thanks.

Hi,
Please can you check if you click the expand symbol at the left of the tab?
Let us know if you are still having problems.

Hi,

There's nothing happen when I select any existing materials from the expanded tab.

Hi,

I found the problem. It's working now. Thanks.

Hello,

A very useful program, however, like the previous commentator I was only able to use the user defined menu as non of the material or insulations appear.

Thanks for your comment.
Please make sure you select the material. If you select the category or subcategory no material is selected. And to expand a category click the small arrow symbol at the left.
Please see help http://www.thermalcalconline.com/help/help.html (section 2.1) for more information.
Please let me know if you are still having any problem

Would be great if there was an option to input and output in Imperial/US system

Hi there, very useful calculator. But what should I be looking for with regards to heat path? I am looking at 2 build options and 1 gives me 2 heat paths and the other (where I have moved the thermal bridge to be behind the insulation) gives me 5 or so?

Ian
If you save both construcctions (they are just text files) locally in your computer, you can email us the files (info@thermalcalconline.com) and I will have a look.

Fantastic tool - saved me a lot of time trying to relearn how to work it out by hand. Very easy to use and I really like the ability to handle bridged layers. My only suggestion would be to allow a new layer to be added at the top of the list. Thanks very much.

Hi There,

I wonder, where should I start, should the internal or external surface be listed as layer 1?
Thanks

Thermalcalconline said...

Hi,
No, the external and internal surface resistances are not entered as layers.
There are specific entries for these values.
When you select an element from the top drop down menu, the surfaces resistances boxes below are filled automatically. But you can always enter any other value.

U Value Calculators no longer available. Only options available are advertisers.

Thermalcalconline said...

The calculators should work in PCs with browsers that have Silverlight installed, but not in mobile devices.
If someone is having problems with the calculators please do let us know.

Do you have a wall build up of a system built house
e.g
outer leaf - roughcast
then - no fines concrete walls
inner leaf- plaster board on dot and dab

total thickness 290-300

Very useful calculator, any chance of an android version for walls, roofs and floors version?

Great site.
Your external surface resistance calculator gives 0.14 horizontal and 0.1 upwards.
I thought the standard recognised values where 0.04 This is a big difference is there a reason?

Hi,
Thermalcalconline said:
Hi,
The values of 0.14 (horizontal) and 0.1 (upwards) are used when the external surface is next to a well ventilated air-layer.
If you scroll further down you will find the "normal" external surface value, which is 0.04 in any direction.

Hi,
I followed the link from the home page to the U value calculator, but it took me to a page with only ads showing.
Does the site depend on Flash? I'm using chrome browser, and periodically Flash will unexpectedly fail
Thanks

Hello Ray,
You have to install Microsoft Silverlight, which is available for free, so that you can use the calculators.

what does 'NaN' mean, when it appears in the box where the U-value should be shown? It shows when I try to calculate a basement wall; if I change the building element to 'external wall' then I get a U-value

very useful calculator, though! thank you

Thermalcalconline said...

Huw
This happens when you don’t enter all the required data, for example for the basement wall you may be leaving some of the extra entries blank or with zero and the program cannot calculate the U value, and the result is NaN. But if you enter all the data (floor slab resistance, depth and wall thickness) then the U value should appear.
Please let us know if you are still having problems.
Thanks for using the U value calculator

Hey, I used your Glazing U-value calculator - thanks a lot -it seems to be the only one on the internet. I am not sure how the calculation works however? Is there a reference that you can give as to the theory behind it?

Thermalcalconline said...

Hi Kestell,
Thanks for using the U value calculator.
The theory is based on the European Standard EN 673:2011

Hi, this is the best online calculator I have found, very thorough as you can select bridging layers, add gaps, etc, brilliant!
The only thing is that some materials are not in the list for the pitched roof buildup I'm trying to calculate - I know that I can create a custom material but it would be good to have the following:
- bitumen felt (ie F1) is in the list but I cannot find modern roofing membrane
- Thermal blanket (ie. thinsulex silver/gold, etc) would also be a good addition

Thanks !

Thermalcalconline said...

Thanks for using the U value calculator and your comment above.
I will include the new materials as you suggested in the next review of the calculator.
If you would like to include more specific modern roofing membranes please email me with your suggestions.

Hello from Australia, majority of frames here are aluminium, with a growing demand for themally broken frames. Could you load these values into your calculator?? I could supply values if required. Thanks JB

Thermalcalconline said...

Hi JB
The software calculates the U value for PVC and wood frames in accordance with EN ISO 10077-1:2006. At the moment aluminium frames are not included, although I am considering to update the software to calculate metal frames U values, if there is enough users interested.
In any case the software allows you to enter a user defined frame U value (in the assigned values tab) just in case you have the aluminium frame U values already calculated or simulated.
If you would be interested in having some frame U values already loaded in the calculator for any user to use, please let me know
Thanks for using the U value calculator.

I have just tried to access your online U-Value calculator for the first time in a while and it is now asking me to install Silverlight which is already installed on my machine? When I download Silverlight to install it, the installer tells me that it can't install as the same version is already installed -what do I do now?

Hi,
Did you try with another internet browser, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera...?

Is this stopped now? I cant access it anymore

Thermalcalconline said...

There is a problem in the server, I contacted them and in a couple of days should be OK.

Hi,
I am trying to access your Calculator for u values on glazing and whole window calcs, even though I've installed silverlight and am using Google chrome browser, it just keeps saying I have to install Silverlight, when I already have. Please help.
thanks Louisa

This is a really valuable and well thought-out calculator, a lot of effort and thought has obviously been spent to make something so tricky manageable. Many thanks!
I am on Linux so am using the old "ExcelOpaque" version, which still works really well. The bridging and corrections options make this the only online calculator I've found that really gives confidence, plus all the detail in the background.

My only suggestions - make the text boxes for materials longer, so the names are easier to see (I have to screenshot the tables to record what I am doing).
Also, but more substantial a challenge - enable saving one's calculations (with a login) so they can be revisited more easily. I'm sure advertisers would appreciate knowing just how many happy visitors you have :-)

Lastly - are you considering a similar tool for handling ventilation losses? It's easy to get carried away aiming for low low U values, and then forget that without MHVR the heat loss can be dominated by air changes, making all that expensive insulation much less effective.

many thanks for a great tool!

Miles

Hi, I've been asked by the local building control officer to confirm that the calculator I used complies with BS EN ISO 8900:1996 but I can't find reference to this. Can you assist?

Anonymous said...

Hi, I have just tried to access your online U-Value calculator but without success. I'm using Firefox and in the past it works well with this calculator. What happened now? (Silverlight installed).

Thermalcalconline said...

I apologise for not replying before the last comments.

Thanks Miles for your comments and suggestions.

BS EN ISO 8900:1996 is an standard for testing U value in a Hot Box. The U value calculation does not need to comply with this standard.

If there is a problem with Silverlight I would suggest to try another browser, Explorer, Chrome, FireFox, Safari, Opera ….
Sorry, I do not know a better solution for this issue, maybe uninstall and reinstall Silverlight. This is a problem more related to Microsoft.
